Smart Shade

Passive Design shade system

Perello _ Tarragona _ Spain
2012 _ Complete

The site is in a protected green area where no permanent roof structures can be built. We had to provide an outdoor dinning and resting are that would have shading protection. To protect it from the South sun we needed a roof while to protect it from the West sun we needed to build a wall. Either option were not suitable. We wanted our design to disappear, it had to be as less intrusive as possible. The area has very strong winds so our proposal had to consider this extra factor.

We proposed a pivoting shading divisor made of steel tubular frame filled with locally sourced canes easy and cheap to replace that can be placed in different postilions. Together with the main timber structure blends perfectly into the landscape. Each of the pivoting shading elements move independently to allow maximum flexibility.

During the time that it is not used the shading elements are vertically placed and fixed to the timber posts with a locking mechanism.

Taking advantage of the level difference there was room for a small pool to cool down during the warm Mediterranean summer days.
