Liceu
Illuminating the Enigma of El Liceu
Barcelona _ Spain
2017 _ Concept Idea
Listed buildings facades can’t be modified. For outstanding buildings this is not a concern but how can listed facades that don’t stand out be refaced or redesigned and still respecting its original protected façade?
El Liceu in La Rambla of Barcelona (opera house) is a perfect example for our case study. Millions of tourist visit Barcelona and walk along its Rambla, but how many of them remember the historical building of El Liceu close to la Boqueria Market?
We believe that using the history of the theater to develop the concept for this project is the right thing to do. We propose to hide the lighting inside polished mirror finish fins that run along the façade. The reason of the material is linked to the room of the mirrors from the inside, the only room that survived after both fires that suffered El Liceu. The mirror finish makes the fins become invisible letting the light be the protagonist at night time, when the theater opens its doors and becomes alive.
